I have been asked a few times in the past, why I paint the things I do... Why I choose to paint a boiled egg, for example, instead of a landscape.
It's a good question! Why do some artists love painting landscapes and beautiful women, while others prefer to paint a boiled egg? It's a mystery!
The truth is, I am simply inspired by 'stuff'.
Yes, of course I love looking at crashing waterfalls and snowy mountains... but I just don't feel compelled to paint them. The gooey white of a soft-boiled egg however, or a pile of old beer bottle tops... Well that really does temp me to paint it!
It's weird, right? I can only assume I was a Magpie in my last life, because I am certainly attracted to shiny things! But in any case, I tend to just paint the 'stuff' I notice around me and enhance the qualities I love about them.
But, right now I have a problem... I don't know what 'stuff' to paint next! The worst place I can be is 'between paintings'. That is always my 'dark place', so I need to start working on something and soon!
Anyway, it's at times like this when I turn to one of my... actually my favourite podcast, 'Your Creative Push', by Youngman Brown (AKA Mike Young). If you haven't yet discovered it, then I suggest you have a listen. It is packed full of inspiring interviews with people who are so willing to share their 'real' selves, the ones who conquer procrastination, self-doubt, artists block... They just get out there and DO IT!
...Actually, I think I have an idea of what to paint after all... And I haven't even listened to today's episode yet! Boy this guy is good!
Q. What are you most inspired to paint?
