When Mess is Good...
Anyone who knows me personally, knows that by nature I am a 'neat' person. And I wish I meant that in the cool American way, but I just mean plain old 'tidy'.
Someone even asked me once if I might be a little 'OCD'... I mean, chuh!!
Okay, so I do admit that I function better when my surroundings are clean and organised... And yes, maybe when somebody does something reeeeeally serious, like leaves the toilet seat up, I might start feeling a little, well... anxious... sweaty... stressed... perhaps hyperventilate a little... with maybe even the odd palpitation thrown in... But really, OCD??? Come on!!
And yes, I also admit that when I finish a painting, I have to clean and organise my studio before I can even think of starting a new one!
But, in my defence, if my studio stays clean for too long, then I can feel really anxious for the complete opposite reason. My studio is way too clean! And I see that as a really bad sign because it means I'm not painting... but also a really good sign because it means I'm not OCD!
So, although I like a clean and tidy home, a chaotic studio makes me feel great! It means there is something going on in there! And there is definitely something going on in my very messy studio right now...
...I'm still in the very raw stages of this one and there is an awful long way to go before I finish this layer. My favorite layer is always the final one, when everything 'pops'... I can't wait for that part!
It's fun painting large, but I'm used to getting a painting done a fair bit quicker than this. But patience is a virtue and all that... I hope it's worth the wait!
Q. Do your surroundings affect how you work?
